WordPress to Introduce Auto-Update Feature in WordPress 3.7

Did you remember when was the last time you update your Chrome browser?

No. It will be updated automatically in background so you won’t have to update it yourself.

Do you think this is something should be added to WordPress?

Andrew Nacin, lead developer for WordPress 3.7 just announced few days ago that one of the primary goals in WordPress 3.7 is to start automatically updating itself for minor releases.

These are some important key features that are still need to be discussed by the dev theme. (Please click on the ticket number to further read about it and feel free to join the discussion)

  • Automatically update WordPress when we can. #22704
  • Verify the sanity of our download package, which includes package signing, SSL, etc., and only updating automatically if we are sure we are secure. #18577 #2500 #20074
  • Verify that files were copied over, to increase stability. #18201
  • Do anything else we can to increase stability, like #17301 #14049 #22881
  • Think about email notifications for updates to admin users (for when we can’t automatically update you). #10787
  • Think about allowing direct updates when we are group-writable, not just owner-writable. #10205

The good thing about auto updating WordPress when minor updates are released is so that when can quickly fix any bug or security issues from the previous version. We all know that hackers constantly looking for any exploits or vulnerabilities in WordPress to break into the site.

However, a lot of developers and users have concern if the auto updating feature will ever break any theme or plugin but I’m pretty sure there are some ways to avoid this issue. Furthermore, I believe it’s very important to highlight that this auto-update feature will only apply for minor releases of WordPress since there will be only minor changes in the files and codes that hopefully won’t alter any existing feature or function.

I can’t wait to see the final result and the release of WodPress 3.7 this upcoming October. There are many interesting ideas being discussed in the Make WordPress site. If you’d like to join the discussion or simply what to read them, here’s this link.

I don’t like auto update of anything. Better that I keep control over updates rather than break something on a site, then work to fix it. I’d much rather see the issues first, then decide the best way to proceed.

Yes I agree with Hal actually. I am not sure I would be wanting automatic updates. I always like to upgrade in a staging environment, check everything is working ok and then copy over. Maybe many people would appreciate it though, we could be the minority. Perhaps make it optional and then we’re all happy :)

This auto update feature is not good i think , as we have set many configuation as per my website setting in wp-config file and auto update have overwrite everything
