StudioPress, the company behind Genesis Framework, one of the best and high quality frameworks for WordPress themes in industry is by far my most favorite theme maker.
Besides Genesis Framework, StudioPress also sells premium Genesis Child Themes and currently there are more than 70 premium child themes available and more is coming with the release of Genesis 2.0 this spring.
Genesis Framework is great, both in terms of flexibility and quality of code. However, to further customize it, according to WordPress best practice, you need to use a child theme. Using child theme will avoid all your customization from being overwrite when upgrading the Genesis Framework to a newer version.
Besides selling great premium child themes, many people might not know that StudioPress had also released few free Genesis child themes.

I had my website built and they used the Genesis framework with the Lifestyle Child Theme and I found it VERY difficult to set up and use at first. Over the past year I have finally learned how to use it somewhat, but to me it just seems overly difficult, especially for a beginner. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I personally prefer Genesis over other thesis framework as it is easy to learn and work with. Take some time and go over the tutorial and manual.
